Red Clay’s Beginnings…

Red Clay Cooperative is a new, secular homeschooling group for Athens, GA and the surrounding areas.  At this time we are in the planning stages.  We want to offer elective classes for older children and also a class for preschool age children.  We will also plan field trips and other activities.  Please e-mail Sarah Stennett at snsple (at) yahoo (dot) com for more information.

LOCATION UPDATE

Currently Sarah is working to secure space at Tuckston United Methodist Church in Athens.  They offer their rooms for free.  If anyone has any other suggestions for free (or cheap) space, please e-mail Sarah.

FEES

Right now there will be no fee to join Red Clay Co-op, but there may be small fees associated with the classes.  Members only need to pay for what they want to participate in.

CLASSES UPDATE

Sarah has found someone to teach both dance and martial arts.  Both classes will be $5 per semester.  Please e-mail her, if you are interested or need more information.

We may also be able to offer drama and Spanish soon.  And if anyone knows of someone who will teach Latin for a small fee, please e-mail Sarah.

It seems rather contradictory for a group that is making a point to be secular planning to meet and hold classes in a Methodist church. It would be better for you all to meet somewhere more, well, secular.

I agree with this comment. As Wikipedia states- Secularity (adjective form of secular) is the state of being separate from religion. How are you going to claim to have a secular group and meet at the methodist church? If you are only open to what you can get for free. Well, Jesus came to earth and died on the cross to save you from all your sin and he gives salvation daily to those willing to accept it. Best part it’s FREE! The Bible (KJV) says in Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; That means me you and even the preist at that methodist church have sin in our lives. Then in Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. That means that what you get for the sin in your life is Hell. Eternal seperation from our Creator. Then there’s the BUT.. the gift of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ’s death on the cross and the payment for all our sins. And lastly, our instructions in Romans 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. In order to recieve that gift all we have to do ask God for forgivness of our sins and turn from our wicked ways. 1 John 1:9 says If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Just ask and he will save your soul. This was not meant only for those who put this group and site together but for anyone who has open ears to the truth presented.

I believe- but could be wrong- that the co-op is secular in nature so that anyone can participate in the classes offered, regardless of their religious choices. Meaning, Christians can join in the classes as well as the Jewish, Islamic, Agnostic, Pagan, Buddhist, Athiest, etc. The other co-ops in and around Athens ONLY want certain people whereas this co-op accepts anyone as long as they respectful. As for meeting at the church… If they get approval to meet there and do not involve religion in said classes, then they are secular. A church is just a building. It doesn’t hold any special power.

Also, they did say that if anyone has any suggestions on other free or cheap places, to let them know. Do YOU have any suggestions for them?

  2. Thank you for your feedback. Our main goal is to offer content that is secular, and more importantly, at a minimal price. So far it has been difficult to find space – two or more rooms – that is affordable. This particular church offers their rooms for free. However, if anyone can recommend another place, we will check out all available locations. Likewise, if there are people interested in participating in the activities and willing to pay a price for them, please state that here. It will give us more possibilities.
